Dave Chapelle And Black Comedians - Profits Off Of Stereotypes
Although that certain word has lost some of its power to shock over the years, black comedians making use of the term in mainstream media has been relatively rare until the showing of Chapelle's Show. In the past, black comedians of foul-mouthed nature use the stereotypes they developed in their early career once they broke into the mainstream. This was clearly exhibited by black comedians with the names of Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock. The trend with them is that they use a loud-mouthed but amicable persona. But with Dave Chapelle, he pushes the limits even more. Chapelle refuses to tone down his work and carelessly throws the 'n-' word around like it was an everyday word like "hello" or "goodbye". Despite the constant use of the term and the constant criticism because of it, Chapelle has neither flinched nor compromised his work to satisfy the critics. Not even the few questions directed at the authenticity of his routines, written with the help of a Caucasian writing partner and sometimes involving his Asian wife in sketches, are enough to deter him. More recently, people have become less affected due to the growing number of black comedians, as well as hip-hop artists that shake up the hesitation of audiences to take in racial humor. Chapelle, being one of the more prominent black comedians, is leading the pack with his show being extremely popular. Many critics however, have argued about Chapelle's exploitation of stereotypes instead of weakening them. Chapelle's reply to this has to do with changing the views of the audiences' racial attitudes and ironies. Never mind the social issues, never mind the critics. Dave Chapelle has changed the face of comedy with his uninhibited routines. No matter how you look at it, there is no denying the fact that black comedians are generating not only fame but also profit with the types of comedy routines and sketches that Dave Chapelle has ultimately popularized. |
